Civitavecchia shore excursions, what to do and which excursions to choose

Visiting Rome and its wonders such as Colosseum or the Vatican Museums is a unique experience, which is worth living in all serenity. Cruise passengers can choose different services:
  •     Official excursions organized by the shipping company
  •     Indipendent Civitavecchia shore excursion with a professional and private driver (I-Tours)
  •     Shared Civitavecchia shore excursions
  •     Civitavecchia shore excursions without reservation
  •     Excursions on your own

What happens when the ship stops at the port?

Before landing
Locate the correct exit in time to avoid any problem. You have two possibilities:
  •     an exit for cruise passengers going on a tour or excursion
  •     an exit for cruise passengers who need a transfer to Rome or to the Fiumicino airport (Fco)
We advise you to ask the on-board staff in good time.
Before landing
Shipping Company Excursions

They are the most expensive. Cruisers are transferred by shuttle bus services but then the visits are on foot. These excursions are often advertised insisting on the fear of losing the ship if alternative services are used but that is not true. Choosing a service offered by the shipping company means travelling in large groups of 40/50 cruise passengers. You will find big shuttle-buses and a few taxis ready to welcome you but pay attention because these are just the first tourist services you will see.

Independent Civitavecchia shore excursion with a professional and private driver (I-Tours)

Much cheaper, safer and more reliable, tour operators offering a reserved and private service are allowed to enter the port and wait for you near the ship docks with comfortable cars. The service is customizable, you do not travel in a large group and you can get as close as possible to the destination of your visit, cutting down unforeseen walks and sparing precious time. If you have reserved this service (I-Tours), go past the big shuttle-buses, taxis and soon you will find your professional driver ready to welcome you with a smile. According to the Italian laws only the booked excursions allow to welcome cruise passengers near the ship. Pre-book required.

Shared Civitavecchia shore excursions

This type of excursion has a convenient price and good quality as you travel in small groups. For a shared tour you have to get a shuttle service or you can follow the pedestrian path to reach the meeting point because cruisers usually land from different ships. This area is located in “Largo della Pace” near the exit of the port. Pre-book required.

Civitavecchia shore excursions without reservation

If you use this type of service which does not required any pre-booking you will get to the meeting point by shuttle bus or on foot and there you will have to deal with the conditions and the price of your excursion.
How you get to the meeting point (Largo della Pace)
If you have chosen to move on your own or in case you have booked a shared excursion or have these tips below can be really helpful:
  • Once landed you will notice immediately the big shuttle buses of the shipping company, go past them and look for the free white shuttle buses with blue writings “Port Mobility” or “Royal Bus”. As the place is often very crowded you may miss them and for this reason we advise you to ask security personnel outside the gates before venturing alone.
  • “Port Mobility” or “Royal Bus” free service leaves you at the meeting point located in “Largo della Pace” where you can also find an information center.
  • From the square of  “Largo della Pace” you can reach the railway station of Civitavecchia either by a taxi (10/20 €) or on foot but you have to walk for about at 3-4 km.
  • When you arrive at the station of Civitavecchia, you will have to look for timetables, destinations (Rome or Airport) and platforms. Here below you will find some more information visiting the official website of the Italian railways.
